Jean-Claude Van Damme, or Van Varenberg as he was then known, was born in Brussels on the 18th of October 1960. Though his first starring role was as European middleweight karate champion, he has since made a name for himself as a true American movie star with leading roles in several box office hits. After appearing in various supporting roles, he made his childhood dream come true by working under some of the greatest action film directors (John Woo, Peter Hyams, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam). Nicknamed 'The Muscles from Brussels', Jean-Claude Van Damme is today pursuing his career in the United States.
