Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Interior design is closely related to architecture, environmental psychology, and product design. Design places functions ahead of purely aesthetic concerns and should not be confused with interior decoration, which focuses mainly on beautifying a space.

Decoration of spaces is as old as the ancient cultures, but the profession of interior design is a relatively young profession. Interior design developed from decorating. After the Industrial Revolution industry and society progressed and people began to place more emphasis on design and interior designing established itself slowly as a professional field. The profession is beyond decoration but not responsible for architecture and engineering.

The goal of the professional interior designer is to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces. A space designed by an interior designer is considered safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate and meets all public health, safety and welfare requirements, including code, accessibility, environmental and sustainability guidelines. It might also include the services of an interior decorator.

The interior design process usually follows a systematic method; researching the needs of the client and the goals, analyzing the requirements, integrating the information in a design, developing of design and preparing drawings, collaborating with professional services in the technical areas, and reviewing during implementation. During the whole process, the interior designer has to work closely with the client in order to come with ideas and to create spaces that will meet the aesthetic, functional and budgetary goals of the client.

The future of interior design will be influenced by global changes, legislation, technological advances, growth and changing population, economy and public awareness as well as by an increasing emphasis on professionalism. Designers will be called upon to have more technical knowledge in specialized design areas. Examples of design specialties are the hospitality, entertainment, institutional or health care industries. Some interior designers restrict themselves to particular subspecialties, designing restaurants or residential kitchens and baths. And a few designers work in highly specialized fields, like designing interiors for airplanes or yachts, or doing historic conservation or restoration. With the increase in the aging population, there is more demand for specialization in design of the living environment of the elderly population, which takes into account health and accessibility issues that can affect the design. And there are different approaches to design that cut through all specialties, like sustainable design (also called green design) and universal design.

Becoming an interior designer involves a formal education in university. The education includes learning to draft, render, space layout, interior materials and methods and philosophy, art and science of constructing interior spaces. The formal education is followed by several years of professional experience under the supervision of a qualified interior designer. To become a professional interior designer, one must pass an internationally recognized qualifying exam. It takes a minimum of six or seven years of education and experience to gain enough skills and knowledge to pass the exam and be licensed to work as an interior designer.
