Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See, Austria, creates classic gents' accessories, such as watches, glasses and writing implements. Additionally, a great many industrial products, domestic appliances and consumer goods were developed, bearing the name ‘Design by F. A. Porsche’. The works are distinguished by clear, elegant and technically perfected designs that betray the company’s automotive origins. Many of Porsche’s designs are made with unusual materials as titanium, glass blasted aluminum and fiber-reinforced resin.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (1935- ) is the son of Ferry Porsche and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the original founder of the Porsche sports car division. In 1957, he enrolled as a student at the Hochschule for Gestaltung in Ulm, where his talent as industrial designer was doubted. F. A. Porsche was dismissed from his education and started practical training in the family business. He had a hand in nearly all the signature Porsche racing cars and sport cars of the 1960s. His best known design is the Porsche 911.
In 1972, F. A. Porsche opened his personal design company, the Porsche Design Studio, in Stuttgart. The first product was a chronograph wristwatch made out of matt black chromed steel. A great many lifestyle products and stylish menswear accessories followed with more watches and products as sunglasses, pens, tobacco pipes and knives. As the company grew, the products diversified; fashion, furniture, TVs, computer monitors, desk lamps, tennis rackets, mobile phones. All these products have the potential of becoming a classic and are only available in Porsche Design stores, exclusive department stores and up-market specialist shops. Porsche Designs also came up with a wheelchair, a grand piano and a yacht. The areas of design within the company are product design, architectural models, transportation design, graphic design and packaging, interface design and more. Watches, however, are still a main business of Porsche Design.
All Porsche Design projects are handled in-house from conceptual design to serial product. It assesses the suitable materials and locates coherent forms to match functions. It draws up draft concepts on the basis of these initial ideas, including hand-drawn sketches. For modeling, the design team uses 2-D and 3-D software as Photoshop, Illustrator, Solid Works, and Rhino.
There are three ways how the designs made by Porsche Design can appear. Porsche Design brand products are exclusively made for Porsche Design, as the wristwatches and sunglasses. Products bearing the manufacturer's name and the writing 'Design by F.A. Porsche' are Grohe bath faucets, Siemens toasters, and Chroma kitchen knives. And then there are products with no hint of Porsche Design at all. Since 2005, when F.A. Porsche retired due to his state of health, all products have been developed and marketed under the brand Porsche Design, with Roland Heiler as the managing director.
Porsche Design Studio is one of Europe’s most recognized design companies of this time. Since Porsche Design was established in 1972, the studio has won over 100 awards, national and international, including the Compasso d'Oro (the first and most recognized award in industrial design).
